What is it?
Neuropathic pain is that which occurs as the result of an injury to or dysfunction of the nervous system, as a result of maladaptive plastic changes after a neurological injury.
Who is it for?
The programme is aimed at people who, after a neurological injury, present neuropathic pain once the rehabilitation process is finished, or people who, during a chronic phase, want to relieve their neuropathic pain and improve their quality of life. This includes people with spinal cord injury (complete and/or incomplete), stroke, patients with complex regional pain syndrome, fibromyalgia, migraine, lumbar pain and phantom pain after amputation.
Techniques used
The Institut Guttmann has developed a new treatment for neuropathic pain that combines non-invasive brain stimulation (NIBS) with virtual reality strategies. The combination of the two techniques induces a more intense and long-lasting analgesic effect without causing unwanted effects on patients’ cognitive capacity, constituting an alternative and/or complementary solution to pharmacological treatments.
Type of intervention
- Initial assessment by an expert healthcare professional.
- Ten 30-minute treatment sessions with NIBS combined with virtual reality (from Monday to Friday for two weeks).
- Final assessment to identify the level of improvement achieved and set therapeutic recommendations.
- In agreement with the patient and with the aim of maintaining the analgesic results in the medium and long term, it is possible to carry out weekly or fortnightly treatment sessions, thus extending the benefits of the technique.
